Center fielder Willie Mays smacked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at Candlestick
Park where the San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs by the score of 10
to 9.
Mays enjoyed a fine evening at the plate. He lifted one out of the park for a
two run home run in the 1st inning and cleared the fences for a two-run home
run (his 6th of the season) in the 5th inning. Chicago had a chance in the
9th but they came up short.
Jim Duffalo(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing 4
runs. Don Larsen gained credit for his 2nd save. The losing pitcher was Dick
Ellsworth(1-2) in relief. It was a tough loss for him as he did not allow an
earned run in his 2 innings of work.
San Francisco's manager was just happy to get a win, 'We've had such a bad
streak of games -- boy, it's great to get the monkey off our back. Now maybe
we can relax a little and play the kind of baseball of which we are capable.'
