Donn Clendenon cracked a homer and had 2 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates
defeated the San Francisco Giants by a score of 6 to 5 at Forbes Field.
San Francisco was unable to claim the lead after Pittsburgh went ahead in the
bottom of the 4th inning when they scored 2 runs on 2 hits. The key at-bat
was by Clendenon who electrified Forbes Field when he lifted one out of the
park for a two run home run (his 1st of the season). San Francisco
threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.
The win was credited to Tom Sturdivant(2-0) who went 6 and 1/3 innings
allowing 3 runs. Roy Face recorded the save, his 6th. Billy O'Dell(1-1)
suffered the loss. He was unable to control the Pittsburgh offense and
allowed 11 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.
The Pittsburgh ballclub's record now stands at 9-5. San Francisco has a
record of 7-7 after the loss.
