Center fielder Jim Hickman ripped a bases loaded blast as the New York Mets

defeated the San Francisco Giants by a score of 4 to 3 at Candlestick

Park.

San Francisco lost it in the 4th inning when New York did all their damage

scoring 4 runners on 3 hits. The key at-bat was by Hickman who deflated the

mood of the partisan fans when he caught a hold of a bad pitch for a Grand

Slam homerun (his 6th of the season). San Francisco had a chance in the 9th

but they came up short.

Jay Hook(6-14) went 8 and 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. Hook

was helped out by Ken Mackenzie who recorded his 9th save. Juan

Marichal(15-4) ended up with the loss. He pitched 8 and 1/3 innings and

surrendered 9 hits and 1 walk.

'Just one or two mistakes were all it took to beat us tonight' San Francisco's

manager said. 'We take these games one day at a time, but this one was hard

to take.'
