First baseman Orlando Cepeda ripped 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Shibe Park
where the San Francisco Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of
10 to 3.
Cepeda was a source of great heartache for the Philadelphia faithful all
evening. He just kept pounding out hits! He lofted a solo-blast 'downtown'
in the 3rd inning, belted a three-run homer (his 25th of the season) in the
4th inning and stroked a base-hit scoring a run in the 8th inning. San
Francisco had 17 hits overall, while Philadelphia had 10.
Billy O'Dell(10-7) allowed 3 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Art Mahaffey(7-14) was given the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in
his 3 and 2/3 innings.
San Francisco now has a record of a league leading 55-34. With this loss,
Philadelphia has a 6-4 record of late, 54-38 overall.
