Right fielder Willie McCovey homered and had 2 RBI as the San Francisco Giants
defeated the New York Mets by a score of 3 to 0 at Shea Stadium.
San Francisco took the lead for good in the top of the 3rd inning scoring one
runner using 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Chuck Hiller delivered a
one-base hit. One out later, Harvey Kuenn came to the plate and doubled.
Jim Davenport then stroked a base-hit scoring the run. The early run support
proved sufficient for Mike McCormick(6-5) and San Francisco. That was all
the run support McCormick required. Neither team managed to score after the
4th inning.
McCormick got relief help from Stu Miller who gained credit for his 14th save.
The losing pitcher was Bob Miller(6-7). Despite the loss, he struckout 10
San Francisco batters in 7 innings.
