Billy O'Dell 1 Hits the Braves for a Shutout.

First baseman Donn Clendenon connected with a 'big fly' and scored 3 times and

Jack Lamabe went 3 and one third strong innings as the Pittsburgh Pirates

topped the Chicago Cubs by a score of 11 to 6 at Forbes Field.



Pittsburgh went ahead for good in the bottom of the 6th inning when they

tallied 2 runs on 3 hits. Pittsburgh had many opportunities throughout the

game and scored in 6 separate innings.



The win went to Lamabe(8-2) who allowed no runs in 3 and 1/3 innings. Barney

Schultz(2-3) was the loser in relief. He gave up 5 runs in 3 innings of

work.



Pittsburgh now has a record of 38-34. With the loss, Chicago has a record of

6-4 lately, 38-35 overall.

In a close game it was the Chicago Cubs 5, the Pittsburgh Pirates 3 at Forbes

Field.



Chicago had 2 runs cross the plate in the top of the 2nd inning with the help

of 3 hits. Andre Rodgers led off and keyed the rally when he stroked a

base-hit. Ron Santo followed, but he was set down on strikes. Cuno Barragan

then lined a one-base hit, and an error was also committed. Bob Will

followed and he would ground out which scored a run. Bob Buhl came to the

plate and stroked a single scoring the final run of the inning. Chicago

totaled 11 on the afternoon.



Buhl(4-8) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 and 1/3 innings and allowing

1 run. Barney Schultz earned his 8th save. Harvey Haddix(5-5) absorbed the

loss.

Joey Jay took a no-hitter into the 6th inning and Don Zimmer had 3 base hits

and 2 RBI at Dodger Stadium as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Los Angeles

Dodgers 6 to 3.



Jay(7-6) pitched a solid game. He went 6 and 2/3 innings surrendering 3 hits

and 2 walks. The right-handed Jay lost his no-hit bid when Maury Wills

singled with two outs in the 6th inning. Los Angeles had a chance to come

back in the 9th but they came up short.



Jay got relief help from Ted Wills who gained credit for his 2nd save. Sandy

Koufax(9-3) suffered the loss. Despite the loss, he struckout 9 Cincinnati

batters in 6 innings.





HOUSTON AT NEW YORK

One run was the difference at Shea Stadium as the Houston Colt 45's defeated

the New York Mets 4 to 3.



Houston took the lead for good in the 6th inning scoring one runner. Houston

finished with 12 hits in the victory.



Ken Johnson(5-6) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings. Jim

Umbricht gained credit for his 6th save. The losing pitcher was Al

Jackson(3-10).



'He gutted it out' Houston's manager said of Johnson. 'I was very impressed

by his tenacity.'

Bob Miller shutout Houston while allowing the New York bullpen a day-off and

shortstop Felix Mantilla cracked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the New York

Mets beat the Houston Colt 45's by a score of 7 to 0.



Mantilla had a good day at the plate. He cracked a two-run shot in the 4th

inning and delivered a solo blast (his 9th of the season) in the 7th inning.

New York rapped out 9 hits for the afternoon.



Miller(5-5) went the distance for the shutout. Jim Golden(5-6) was charged

with the loss. He gave up 4 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings.



ST. LOUIS AT PHILADELPHIA

Larry Jackson allowed St. Louis' manager to rest his bullpen, tossing a

complete game at Shibe Park where the St. Louis Cardinals beat the

Philadelphia Phillies 4 to 2.



St. Louis did all the necessary damage in the 4th inning scoring 4 runners on

4 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Ken Boyer who deflated the

crowd as he lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 10th of the season).

Philadelphia was set down quietly in the bottom of the 9th.



The winning pitcher was Jackson(5-10) who allowed 2 runs for the game. Chris

Short(8-3) ended up with the loss. 'It wasn't my best outing, but I'll take

the win' Jackson said.

First baseman Fred Whitfield left the yard and had 3 RBI as the St. Louis

Cardinals staged a dramatic comeback over the Philadelphia Phillies by a

score of 7 to 4 at Shibe Park.



St. Louis came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning as they

scored 4 runs on 2 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by

Whitfield who silenced the crowd when he belted a three-run homer (his 3rd of

the season). St. Louis managed 11 in their victory.



The victory went to Bob Gibson(6-7) who went 8 and 2/3 innings, allowing 4

runs. Lindy McDaniel earned the save, his 10th. Jim Owens(3-1) was the

losing pitcher in relief. He surrendered 4 runs and 2 hits in 1 inning.





MILWAUKEE AT SAN FRANCISCO

Billy O'Dell allowed 1 hit while blanking Milwaukee and center fielder Willie

Mays smacked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the San Francisco Giants outscored

the Milwaukee Braves 6 to 0.



It was a good day for San Francisco thanks to Mays. He cleared the fences for

a two-run home run in the 3rd inning, ripped a base-knock in the 5th inning

and lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 25th of the

season) in the 7th inning. San Francisco banged out 10 on the afternoon.



O'Dell(9-4) was credited with the shutout. Bob Shaw(5-8) was given the loss.

With this win, San Francisco has a league leading 46-27 record. They have

been 7-3 lately. With the loss Milwaukee now has a record of 33-41.
