Billy O'Dell allowed San Francisco's manager to rest his bullpen, tossing a
complete game as the San Francisco Giants outscored the Cincinnati Reds 3 to
2.
O'Dell(7-4) delivered a fine performance for San Francisco. He allowed 8 hits
and no walks in 9 innings. Cincinnati made it exciting in the 9th, but they
were unable to push the needed runs across.
The loss was charged to Bob Purkey(7-5). He allowed 3 runs and 8 hits in 8
innings. Cincinnati's manager was in a contemplative mood after the tough
loss, 'It is really hard to lose this kind of a game. It may seem weird to
some, but it is easier to take the occasional blow-out loss. It is the ones
that just barely get away that hurt so much - like this one!'
