Jay Hook allowed New York's manager to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete
game as the New York Mets topped the Chicago Cubs by a score of 4 to 3 at
Shea Stadium.
New York had 2 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 7th inning. The
crucial at-bat was provided by Joe Christopher who elicited a roar from the
hometown fans when he cracked a two-run shot (his 5th of the season). New
York had just 6 hits for the afternoon.
Hook(4-8), allowing 3 runs for the game, picked up the victory. The loss was
charged to Dick Ellsworth(3-10) in relief.

Ron Santo went yard and had 3 RBI at Shea Stadium where the Chicago Cubs beat
the New York Mets by the score of 10 to 9.
The game was decided in the 9th inning. Ken Hubbs stroked a one-base hit.
Billy Williams was the next batter, but he struck out. Ernie Banks then
tripled scoring the run. Chicago banged out 15 on the afternoon.
Paul Toth(4-1) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings. Willard
Hunter(1-2) absorbed the loss in relief. Chicago now has a record of 34-33.
With this loss, New York has a 5-5 record of late, 22-44, worst in the league
overall.
CINCINNATI AT PHILADELPHIA

Left fielder Ted Savage went deep and had 4 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies
defeated the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 6 to 4 at Shibe Park.
The Philadelphia fans enjoyed the offense provided by Savage. He doubled
knocking in a run in the 1st inning, hit a single in the 3rd inning and
bombed a two-run dinger (his 3rd of the season) in the 7th inning.
Philadelphia had 9 hits overall, while Cincinnati had 6.
The winning pitcher was Dallas Green(4-2) who allowed 3 runs in 5 innings.
Dennis Bennett earned the save, his 2nd. Joe Nuxhall(2-2) was given the
loss. He allowed 6 runs and 9 hits in 8 innings.

Frank Howard blasted a homerun and had 3 RBI and Sandy Koufax blanked Houston
allowing just 3 hits as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Houston Colt 45's by
a score of 4 to 0.
Koufax(9-2) was on top of his game. He didn't allow much, just 3 hits and 2
walks in 9 innings. Koufax struckout 11 Houston batters lowering his ERA
from 2.09 to 1.89. Los Angeles had 8 hits for the afternoon.
Hal Woodeshick(0-10) took the loss. It was a tough loss for him as he did not
allow an earned run in his 6 innings of work.
Houston's manager was upset after the game. 'I don't like to complain but did
you see that umpires strike zone?', he said. 'Maybe they ought to start
calling the strike zone the way it's printed in the rule book.'
MILWAUKEE AT PITTSBURGH

Right fielder Hank Aaron homered and had 2 RBI as the Milwaukee Braves
outscored the Pittsburgh Pirates 8 to 4.
Milwaukee took the lead for keeps in the 2nd inning when they tallied 3 runs
on 5 hits. For the game Milwaukee out-hit Pittsburgh 15 to 7.
The victory went to Warren Spahn(9-6) who went 8 and 1/3 innings, allowing 3
runs. The losing pitcher was Al McBean(2-10). He allowed a few too many
baserunners giving up 12 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.
ST. LOUIS AT SAN FRANCISCO

Jack Sanford was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game at Candlestick Park as the San Francisco Giants beat the St.
Louis Cardinals by the count of 6 to 2.
Sanford(6-6) gave a fine effort for San Francisco. He went 9 innings allowing
7 hits and 4 walks. San Francisco finished with 11 hits in the victory.
Larry Jackson(4-10) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 6 hits and 2 walks in
5 innings.
