First baseman Orlando Cepeda launched 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Billy
Pierce was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete
game as the San Francisco Giants man-handled the St. Louis Cardinals - the
final score was 11 to 1.
Cepeda was a one-man wrecking crew. He blasted a solo shot in the 3rd inning,
lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 17th of the season) in the 6th inning and
doubled bringing in two baserunners in the 9th inning. San Francisco rapped
out 14 hits for the night.
Pierce(6-2) was the winner allowing 1 run for the game. The loss was charged
to Bob Gibson(3-7). He was touched for 4 homeruns in his 7 innings of work.
The San Francisco ballclub's record now stands at a league leading 36-22. With
this loss, St. Louis has a 7-3 record of late, 24-32 overall.
