At Riverfront Stadium, the Cincinnati faithful were treated to an intriguing

pitcher's duel. Jim O'Toole(3-10) finally bested his Chicago counterpart,

Bob Anderson(4-4), by the score of 4 to 0.



Chicago surrendered all of the runs Cincinnati needed in the 6th inning when

they scored 4 runs on 2 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Gordy

Coleman who electrified Riverfront Stadium when he delivered a one-base hit

bringing in two baserunners. Cincinnati finished with just 6 hits in the

victory.



The losing pitcher was Anderson. He pitched 6 innings giving up 3 hits and 5

walks.



PITTSBURGH AT HOUSTON

Bob Bruce went the distance as the Houston Colt 45's defeated the Pittsburgh

Pirates 3 to 1 at Colt Stadium.



Houston wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning with 2 runs on 2

hits. After an out was recorded, Al Spangler started the attack as he

stroked a base-hit. After another out, Roman Mejias came up and he bombed a

two-run dinger (his 11th of the season). That was all the runs Bruce(8-4)

needed. Pittsburgh had 9 hits in the game while Houston had 5, but Houston

had the more timely hits.



Earl Francis(5-6) was the loser. He allowed 5 hits and 1 walk in 6 innings.



MILWAUKEE AT ST. LOUIS

Bob Hendley allowed Milwaukee's manager to rest his bullpen, tossing a

complete game as the Milwaukee Braves outscored the St. Louis Cardinals 2 to

1.



Hendley(7-7) earned his pay with a solid performance for Milwaukee. He went 9

innings surrendering 8 hits and 3 walks reducing his ERA from 4.94 to 4.63.

St. Louis had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.



Larry Jackson(6-11) was the losing pitcher. He was a hard-luck loser as he

did not allow an earned run in his 9 innings of work.



This win by Milwaukee continues their recent hot streak. In their last ten

games, they have a record of 8-2. For the season, they are 41-43. With this

loss, St. Louis has a 5-5 record of late, 38-45 overall.



PITTSBURGH AT HOUSTON

Jim Campbell hit one over the fence and had 2 RBI and Dick Farrell came

through with a solid 9 innings as the Houston Colt 45's defeated the

Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 9 to 0 at Colt Stadium.



Houston jumped out to the early lead in the first inning scoring a single run

using 3 hits. Bob Lillis singled. Al Spangler stepped up next and he laid

down a sacrifice bunt. Norm Larker then banged out a single. One out later,

Campbell stepped in and he slapped a one-base hit scoring the run. That

early run support was enough for Farrell(11-4) and Houston. Houston had 16

hits for the afternoon.



Al McBean(2-14) ended up with the loss. He was unable to control the Houston

offense and allowed 10 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings.



Pittsburgh's manager was obviously impressed with the pitching of Farrell,

'That guy made us look a little silly out there this afternoon. We just

couldn't get to him at all - everything was working for him. I just hope

that he got that kinda performance out of his system.'



NEW YORK AT SAN FRANCISCO

Bob Miller pitched 9 strong innings as the New York Mets topped the San

Francisco Giants by a score of 3 to 1 at Candlestick Park.



New York came up with all the runs they needed in the 5th inning scoring 3

runs utilizing 3 base hits. Choo Choo Coleman began the New York spurt when

he delivered a solo blast (his 2nd of the season). Jim Hickman next to the

plate and he doubled. Rod Kanehl then popped a two-run clout over the fence

(his 3rd of the season). New York rapped out 9 hits for the afternoon.



The victory went to Miller(6-6) who went the distance allowing 1 run. Billy

O'Dell(9-6) was tagged with the loss. He surrendered 3 runs and 6 hits in 4

innings.



'He came out with good stuff,' New York's manager said about Miller. 'He threw

the ball good from the first pitch on.'
