WEB GEMS- Bot 6th: Chuck Hiller robbed Marv Throneberry of a base hit.
Craig Anderson was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game and Frank Thomas hit one over the fence at Shea Stadium as the
New York Mets won in dramatic fashion coming back to beat the San Francisco
Giants by the count of 3 to 2.
New York erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
with 2 runs on 4 hits. Thomas started the attack as he smashed a bases-empty
'big-fly' (his 12th of the season). Marv Throneberry next to the plate and
he laced a base-hit. Felix Mantilla then doubled. Jim Hickman was up next
and he drew a walk to load the bases. Sammy Taylor came to the plate and
grounded into a double play. Cliff Cook kept the inning going and lined a
single giving New York the victory as 29,363 happy fans celebrated wildly.
New York had 7 hits for the night.
Anderson(2-6) got the victory, allowing 2 runs for the game. Bobby Bolin(4-4)
was tagged with the loss. He gave up 6 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.
'We just wouldn't give up,' Thomas said. 'Much of the credit goes to our fans
- they were with us the whole way.'
