Billy Pierce(5-1) and Craig Anderson(1-6) locked horns in a pitcher's duel
with Pierce and the San Francisco Giants coming out on top of the New York
Mets 1 to 0.
San Francisco promptly took the lead in their half of the first scoring one
runner. That early scoring was all that Pierce needed. New York had a
chance in the 9th but they came up short.
Pierce got relief help from Stu Miller who gained credit for his 8th save.
'Anytime you lose it hurts,' said New York's manager 'but it's losing the
close ones that really hurt.'
