Center fielder Bill Virdon went deep and had 2 RBI at Forbes Field as the
Pittsburgh Pirates beat the San Francisco Giants in 10 innings by the count
of 5 to 3.
The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings. Pittsburgh won it in
the 10th inning. Jim Marshall led off and started the rally when he singled.
Virdon stepped up to the plate and he bombed a two-run dinger (his 6th of
the season) giving Pittsburgh the win and sending the home town fans into a
frenzy. Despite losing, San Francisco out-hit Pittsburgh 11 to 7.
The winning pitcher was Diomedes Olivo(7-4) who allowed no runs in 1/3 of an
inning. Bobby Bolin(8-9) was the losing pitcher in relief. He was unable to
retire a batter and surrendered 2 hits and no walks.
