At Shibe Park the Philadelphia Phillies were finally were able to get back on
the winner's track and outscored the San Francisco Giants in 11 innings 6 to
3.
The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings. Philadelphia came out the
victor in the 11th inning. Tony Taylor led off and he stroked a base-hit.
Don Larsen then uncorked a pitch that was ruled a passed ball. After an out
was recorded, Tony Gonzalez stepped in and he drew a walk. Don Demeter
followed and he belted a three-run homer (his 35th of the season) resulting
in an exciting win for Philadelphia and a wild post-game celebration by the
home town fans. Philadelphia rapped out 10 hits for the afternoon.
The victory was credited to Jack Baldschun(4-1) who went 1 inning, allowing no
runs. Larsen(4-1) was charged with the loss in relief. He pitched 1/3 of an
inning allowing 2 hits and 1 walk.
'It's been a rough ride lately, but this was a good win for us' said
Philadelphia's manager, 'Maybe this will put us back on track.'
