One run was the difference at Forbes Field as the San Francisco Giants scored
5 runs in the 2nd inning and defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 9 to 8.
San Francisco came up with 5 runs in the 2nd inning with the help of 3 hits.
The key offensive moment was provided by Chuck Hiller who quieted the home
crowd when he slapped a base-hit which was good for two runs. Pittsburgh had
a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
Juan Marichal(19-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 and 2/3 innings and
allowing 6 runs. Stu Miller gained credit for his 20th save. Tom
Sturdivant(9-4) suffered the loss. He surrendered 5 runs and 4 hits in 1 and
1/3 innings.
San Francisco's manager was beaming after the game, 'Not only were we making
good contact, but a lot of balls we hit seemed to have 'eyes'! I just love
winning these tight ones! It was just our evening - no doubt about it!'
